The books themselves are written in a second person perspective and offer the reader the opportunity to control the outcome of the story (to a certain degree). The adventure gamebook phenomenon arguably began in the late seventies/early eighties with the Choose Your Own Adventure series, written mainly by Edward Packard and published by Bantam Books.
